Wildlife we're
fighting for

South Yorkshire is home to an extraordinary range of wildlife, but many of our best-loved species are struggling. Working with local and national experts, we've identified more than 200 priority species that need focused conservation action, from rare flowering plants and insects to mammals, reptiles and birds.

The strategy sets out specific measures to support each priority species, targeting action where it will make the biggest difference. We've also identified 11 species as candidates for reintroduction to South Yorkshire. These include Eurasian Beaver, Pine Marten and Hazel Dormouse - species that have been lost from our region but could return where the habitat is right. By concentrating effort where it's needed most, we can make sure every action counts.
